Project: Carissa Care

Location: Namibia

Mission: To provide female empowerment opportunities to underprivileged girls

Carissa Care is a project established more than a decade ago in memory of a young Namibian girl who died at the age of 12.

Her parents were keen to fulfil Carissa’s loss of potential by providing education and leadership opportunities to other young women in underprivileged areas of the community.

This project is financially supported by WEMF but also by the World Extreme Medicine Hostile Environment Heat courses which are run in Namibia and put the profits forward to support Carissa Care.

Outcome

  • 42 girls graduating from Pre-Vocational and Vocational Training programs
  • Daily meals for students who might otherwise go hungry
  • The chance for girls to attend school with dignity, wearing proper uniforms
  • Access to essential hygiene products, supporting health and self-esteem
  • Opportunities for leadership development and personal growth

Over more than 10 years, Carissa Care has provided uniform and learning resources to female secondary school pupils, promoting education and giving leadership opportunities to a segment of the population who would otherwise be largely ignored.

This investment in the education of young women help establish a greater potential for each individual to take their lives further.

WEMF provides financial rather than practical support for this project, through the Fund itself and the profits of World Extreme Medicine Heat courses run in Namibia.
