The World Extreme Medicine Fund (WEMF) has received formal accreditation for its Maxillofacial (Max Fax) Surgical Course delivered in Ukraine.

This milestone marks a significant step forward in ensuring that high-quality, field-relevant surgical training is both recognised and standardised, even in some of the most complex and resource-limited environments.

The accreditation has been awarded through a recognised academic institution, with details withheld for operational security.

WEMF (formally known as Medics4Ukraine) was established in response to the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, when small, agile teams moved rapidly to deliver critical medical supplies directly to areas in need. What began as an immediate, practical response to a fast-moving crisis has since evolved into a wider initiative supporting medical training, resources, and frontline capability in regions affected by conflict and instability.

Since those first convoys crossed into Ukraine, WEMF has delivered over £4.5 million worth of medical aid, building a reputation for being responsive, reliable, and operationally focused.

The Max Fax Surgical Course forms a key part of that work. Delivered in Ukraine, it is designed to equip clinicians with the practical skills required to manage severe trauma and surgical emergencies in austere, high-pressure settings. The training focuses on real-world application, supporting those working where access to equipment, personnel, and evacuation pathways may be limited or delayed.

“From the earliest days of Medics4Ukraine (M4U), our focus has always been on delivering practical medical support where it is needed most, whether through frontline training, critical supplies, or building long-term clinical capability. Achieving formal accreditation for the MaxFax Surgical Course is an important milestone because it validates the quality of training being delivered in some of the most challenging environments imaginable. It reflects the commitment of our faculty and partners, and reinforces our belief that clinicians working in conflict and austere settings deserve access to world-class education that is both operationally relevant and internationally recognised.” — Luca Alfatti, FRRHH, FEMW, Co-Founder and COO, World Extreme Medicine Fund

Burjor Langdana, Course Lead for the Max Fax Surgical Course, has played a central role in the development and delivery of the programme. His leadership has ensured that the training remains grounded in the realities faced by clinicians operating in conflict zones and remote environments, with a strong emphasis on adaptability, decision-making, and practical skill application.

“From two vans crossing a border to a formally accredited programme, accreditation matters, but what matters more is that these skills work when it’s cold, chaotic, and lives depend on them.”
— Burjor Langdana

The formal accreditation of the course reinforces the credibility and impact of WEMF’s work, demonstrating a continued commitment to delivering education that meets recognised standards while remaining operationally relevant.

As global demand for advanced trauma and surgical training continues to grow, particularly in regions affected by conflict and humanitarian crisis, this milestone highlights the importance of accessible, high-quality education that can be delivered where it is needed most.

Further updates will follow as the programme continues to develop.
